What happens on a beach clean?

We will meet in the evenings and work as a group to try and clear up all the rubbish left behind on the beach. There will be an arranged meeting point where team members will hand out bin bags and litter pickers. You can help out for just a few minutes, or stay until the end of the clean which typically runs for about an hour.

What should I bring with me to a beach clean?

MASKS

These are optional, but you are welcome to wear them if it makes you feel more comfortable.

LITTER PICKERS

We will have litter pickers to hand out, but please note, we currently have a limited number of litter pickers. If you have your own litter picker, we would encourage you to bring it with you.

HEAVY DUTY GLOVES

Current COVID regulations mean that we are not able to hand out re-usable gloves. We would like to avoid handing out single-use gloves as these contribute to the plastic waste problem. We would therefore ask that you bring your own gloves. Gardening gloves, or work gloves are both good options.

COVERED SHOES

Please wear suitable footwear, as there may be sharp objects such as broken glass on the beach.

Which beach in Margate will you be cleaning?

We will begin by focussing our efforts on Margate Main Sands as this is where most of the tourists flock during the summer moths. We hope in time to be able to expand our operation to cover numerous beaches.

Are the beach cleans suitable for children?

All people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who will take full responsibility for their welfare during the clean.

What happens to all the rubbish that is collected?

We are just at the beginning of our journey as an organisation. We are currently working on partnerships with recycling companies.

We recycle beach toys with Toys 4 Life

We recycle inflatables, windbreakers and umbrellas with Wyatt and Jack

For now, we ask that you do one of the following with the rest of the litter:

  • Take the litter home with you and put it in your own recycling bin.

    or

  • Find an empty bin near the beach and put it in there. If you cannot find an empty bin, leave it with our team and we will find a suitable place for it.

What happens after the clean?

We would love to meet you! You are welcome to stay and chat with the team and the other volunteers. We will be at The Sea Shed, where you can buy food and drinks up until 10pm. If you do purchase anything from the beach, we would ask that you take the packaging home with you and recycle it if possible.
